When Should You Change Your Water Filter

by Ari Bayme 02 Oct 2026 0 comments

When we began engineering OMFILTERS we knew that for the system to be effective, we would need a goal of only having to change the filter once a year!  After extensive calculations, we realized this mean that the filter would need a capacity of 6,000 gallons!  How did we come to that?

When restricted strictly to the kitchen sink for drinking, food prep, and washing up, 6,000 gallons represents exactly one year of daily use for a typical household.

Across all bathrooms and kitchens, the average US household runs about 27 gallons of water through its faucets every day. If we isolate just the kitchen sink to a conservative 16 to 17 gallons per day, here is exactly how that volume breaks down over 24 hours:

Activity Daily Volume Flow Time Equivalent
Dish Rinsing & Hand Washing 10–12 gallons ~7 minutes of active washing at a standard 1.5 GPM flow rate
Produce Prep & Kitchen Cleanup 3–4 gallons ~2 minutes for washing vegetables, rinsing sponges, and wiping counters
Drinking & Cooking Water 2–3 gallons Filling drinking glasses, coffee reservoirs, and boiling pots
Daily Total ~16.4 gallons ~11 minutes total faucet run time per day

At an exact average of 16.44 gallons a day, a household hits 6,000 gallons in precisely 365 days.

When sizing sub-micron carbon block media, 6,000 gallons ensures a family can use a single sanitary quick-change (SQC) cartridge for drinking, cooking, and washing for one full year before the internal media degrades or the flow rate drops.
